When is Armed Forces Day 2024?

Observed: 21st February 2024, Wednesday

Add to calendar

Armed Forces Day is an annual event that marks South Africa's greatest wartime maritime disaster - the sinking of the troopship SS Mendi in 1917. The Day is now a public holiday, celebrated on the 21st of February. It does not appear that South Africans will see their national armed forces on parade this year, due to ongoing budget cuts. However, there will still be a number of events and activities taking place around the country to mark the Day.

The five major objectives of Armed Forces Day are, according to the SANDF, to:

1. Unite all South Africans behind the country's defence force. 2. Foster a spirit of patriotism and national pride. 3. Educate the public about the role of the SANDF in protecting the country. 4. Recruit new members to the SANDF. 5. Provide an opportunity for the SANDF to interact with the public.

Armed Forces Day Celebrations

The Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), President Cyril Ramaphosa, will deliver the main address at the Armed Forces Day parade in Pretoria. There will also be a number of other events and activities taking place around the country, including:

  • Military parades and demonstrations
  • Open days at military bases
  • Exhibitions and displays of military equipment
  • Concerts and other entertainment events
