Mexico City: New Name, New Era

From Mexico DF to CDMX

On February 29, 2016, Mexico City officially changed its name from Mexico DF (Distrito Federal) to CDMX (Ciudad de México). This change was more than just a cosmetic one; it reflected a deeper transformation of the city's status and role within Mexico.

A New Political Entity

Prior to 2016, Mexico City was a federal district, meaning it was directly under the control of the federal government. However, the new constitution granted CDMX greater autonomy, giving it the powers of a state government.

This change gives CDMX more control over its own affairs, including its budget, laws, and public policies. It also allows the city to directly elect its own mayor and other officials.

A Global City

CDMX is one of the largest and most important cities in the world. It is a major financial, cultural, and political center for Mexico and Latin America.

The city is home to a diverse population of over 9 million people and is a hub for international business and tourism. CDMX is also a major destination for migrants from all over Mexico and the world.

A City of Change

The change to CDMX is a symbol of the city's continuing evolution. Over the past few decades, CDMX has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a vibrant and cosmopolitan metropolis.

The city's new name reflects its growing importance and its role as a leader in Mexico and the world. CDMX is a city of the future, a city that is constantly reinventing itself.
